Crop or not to crop, that IS the question!

I get questioned a LOT on why the pictures I deliver have so much space around them....well, not every photo does, but if I'm photographing a large group, or your whole body, I will leave space, and there is a really easy answer why....photo sizes are wonky.  I'm going to try and explain this, and it really comes down to simple math, but may look more like a bit of common core math (if you're a parent, you know what I'm talking about!) but a 'full frame' camera will spit out images at a 2:3 ratio.  My camera happens to be a full frame, so images at a 4x6 will print the whole image.  I like 4x6's, and 8x12's (but good luck finding frames for that one) and a 16x24 are my favorite large size with out gasping and groaning "Whoa, that is huge", and then the 20x30.

So those are the happy sizes.  Simple, clean, prints everything, easy peasy.  Now comes the 5x7.  In simple, easy, round, terms, it chops about an inch off the long edge. 8x10? Even wonkier...that chops 2 inches off the long size.  If I cropped before I sent them, and you decided you wanted an 8x10 and I didn't leave those 2 extra inches, you would be cursing me when ordering....and I prefer that not to happen ;)  Best bet is to look when you are printing them.  You can always zoom in or adjust what is being trimmed in the cropping process during ordering.  Its silly, and hopefully the visual below will show you what happens to the photo of the same beautiful little girl.  Its all exactly the same full image, but the prints have different ratios, so some of the image gets chopped off!

So if you ever get stuck, I am more than happy to help you when ordering, and if you are just cropping for posting to share with friends on social media, I can help with that too!  There is a rhyme and a reason to my madness (at least on this subject!) But initially when I deliver your photos, you will see extra space on some - and now you know its for a reason!!

Oh...and ordering your pictures to last a lifetime? My favorite place is mpix.com which is an amazing place for consumers like yourself to get those pictures printed!

Days Gone. Columbus Ohio Photographer, in her Vintage Worthington Home.

Outside of the studio, real kids, real messes, real life, real pictures.

I've been watching.  I have been paying attention.  Watching those hours tick by, those minutes, those seconds, and mostly those days.  I see the confidence growing, the vocabulary flourishing, and personality taking shape.  I've experienced the time flash-forward moments where I see a young woman, and then back again to that toothless grin.  I can't wait to watch her grow up, I just hope some days go by a little slower than others.

She wants to be an artist, a dancer, a singer, a song writer, a photographer and a Mommy.  She only ever wears mismatched socks, and loves her pajamas.  She is an animal lover, and animals love her.  She loves to read, and thinks pickles are the most disgusting thing on the planet and is totally convinced that I eat them *JUST* so she has to smell them.  She writes me books, and jokes, and books of jokes.  She has a portfolio of her drawings, and her paintings and artwork are framed and hanging on the walls.  She serenades me any time there is silence.  She comes with me to run errands *JUST* so we can dance in the car to the radio.

Some days, her little being is so reminiscent  of myself when I was six.  Its like watching my reflection.... only this one will pave her own path.

Studio photography session for this handsome baby!

This little guy was so darn cute.  He was like a log when they showed up.  I mean, a log.  He was sawing them, he was built like one, he was out!  I'm thankful he was out when they arrived, because once he woke up, he was WAY too interested to see what was going on! It was so sweet, and I love the awake shots! He was so cute.  Not a peep of complaints, just hung out, peed on me, and then did some yawning. Sounds like a perfect session to me!  (I almost always get peed on....its one of the hazards. Ha!)

An awesome letter from a fellow Worthington Mom....

This just warms my heart.

I truly want you to love your photos.  I understand that sometimes kids will be kids.  I understand they are tired, or need breaks, or need a snack, or a hug and a quick snuggle.  I'm not a clock watcher, I'm one who makes sure I have what I need to deliver images that you will love for a life time.  This little man arrived a little unsure about me, and my studio.  He needed some time to warm up, so we hung out and had some Teddy Grahams :)

I'm thankful that this mama realized, not because I do it to get recognized, but because I want her to realize that she is special and the images that I return to her were just as special to me.

Come on over to the studio.  We will chat.  We will hang out.  We will be silly.  May eat some Teddy Grahams, or puffs or a ham sandwich.  We may tickle, and giggle.  We may take photos while you are sitting on Mama's tummy as she's laying down to be out of the shot.  We can get dressed up, or get fancy, or be a pirate, the choice is yours!  Just come on over!

Cuddle of Love, in Columbus, Ohio

There is something so amazing about these little tiny bundles that you all bring to my studio.  The baby smell is so, so, so good (and believe me....compared to the childhood smells going on in my house with an almost 10 year old and almost 7 year old, I know what bad smells are!) and they are so tiny (again refer to above said BIG kids that are long and lanky that don't really fit in my lap any more, even though I try!) and they fit perfectly into the crook of your arm.  They smile as they dream, and only want your love to perfectly cuddle around their body.  I wish it lasted longer!!

So....this is my nephew.  I mean the baby, not the grown man.... Ha! The bearded one is my brother in law, who happened to marry my sister.  They are complete Ohio State University fans, and completely smitten with their little bundle.  Little man is surrounded by hand made blankets from Grandmas and aunts, by his fathers dog tags, and his parents arms.

Welcome to the world sweet boy.

Fresh 48 Hospital Session at Riverside Methodist Hospital

Its a Boy!!

I love when multiple generations are present at sessions.  There is just something so special about seeing grandma wrap up her sweet grandson and handing him to his mother, her daughter.  I get all sappy just thinking about it.  I love fresh new little baby bits - the sweet button noses, the punchy tiny hands, the curled new legs, the swirl of a cowlick in how the hair lays...all so individualized, all their own, all new.

Being back at the hospital, where I delivered both of my own, is always so reminiscent. Some days I see my OB, some days I see the nurse that helped me name my daughter (yes....our favorite, wonderful nurse, Gretchen, helped us pick from 3 names because we couldn't decide only hours before being released!) Some days when I walk through the hospital halls the the shock of the brisk cold air that hits you from the opening of the double automatic doors reminds me of the gurney quickly carrying me to the OR for my first cesarean section.  Its amazing how many memories, and feelings come back every time I step into this hospital.
